These sites have been recommended by Massachusetts Consumer Health Reference
Center:
- Medline Plus : A large
collection or database of articles, many hard to read for the layperson.
However, if you type in "easy to read" in the search box as well as
your topic you may find what you need. Also has local sites. Just look for this
logo after you open a link:

- Medlineplus
Tutorials: These 29 tutorials take users through the whole aspect of a
disease (such as diabetes), diagnostic test (MRI) or surgical procedure (hip
replacement.)
- Healthfinder:
is a gateway consumer health and human services information web site from the
United States government which can lead consumers to online publications,
clearinghouses, databases, web sites and support and self help groups.
- Familydoctor.org : Good general
site for information on a wide variety of family health issues for all ages.
- New
England Regional Center : The local center of the National Library of
Medicine is based at the University of Connecticut Health Center. They provide
services to the New England region, Consumer Health Information and DOCLINE
queries.
- Merck Manual:
Electronic version is based on the sixteenth edition of this standard reference
work. Easy to search by keyword. Quick and complete.
- National
Mental Health Consumers Self-help Clearinghouse: This site includes
journal articles, Information and Referral, Online Consultation and
publications.
- Lab Tests Online : Information on
clinical lab testing
- Directory of Health Organizations
- Medem Network: Connecting Physicians
and Patients
U.S. News and World Reports recommends:
- E.medicine: a site geared for
physicians and includes the booklets a doctor might give you about your
disease or condition.
- WebMd : a good site for nutrition, diet
and fitness information. Also has message boards and chats. Some sections
are for a fee.
- Centers for Disease Control: this site
covers more than diseases such as information about effect's of wildfire
smoke and flu recall hoaxes.
