- Pensions and Social Security
- A representative from the local Social Security office came to talk
about what happens to our pensions when we begin to receive Social Security.
The answers may surprise you. One of the issues is called The Government
Pension Offset (GPO). Sometimes called the Public Pension Offset, it is a
provision in Social Security law that can reduce or eliminate the Social
Security benefit for spouses, divorced spouses, and surviving spouses who
also receive a pension based on their own work for federal, state or local
government that was not covered by Social Security. The current provisions
became law in 1983. Here are some links.

"Don't Close the Book on
Libraries" Campaign
The Governor's proposed budget cuts disproportionately cut
funding for libraries while libraries are being used more and more.
Traditionally during economic downturns, the library is the resource for
unemployed, under-employed and anyone trying to make do with less. In addition,
library funding never returned to the level it had been in the 1990s before the
last "crash." Cuts to the regional systems could affect the
delivery system which we all depend on. Check out this
article about the MLA rally that was held November 4 at the State House.
Write to Rep. Poirier, Sen. Brown and Gov. Patrick (see above) to express your
support for libraries.
